Jordan Shield

The Stratford Cycling Club held the Jordan Shield over 60km from Stratford to Strathmore and return on Sunday.

The 20 minute bunch of Steve Smith, CJ Peters, Mike Carter and John Larkin worked well together until Sangsters Hill when Steve Smith rode away in pursuit of the last limit rider John Bowie, who had a 1m30s lead at the top of the hill.  Smith caught Bowie in the last kilometre to record a fine solo victory in 1.53.45.  Peters also caught Bowie to claim 2nd place in 1.54.19, with Bowie hanging on for 3rd in 2.04.32.

The scratch riders Mel Titter and Simon Brown caught the 2 minute bunch early, but still finished 5 minutes behind the winner, with Titter taking 5th place and fastest time in 1.38.29.

 

O2 Project/Bike Barn Walker Shield

The Stratford Cycling Club held the O2 Project/Bike Barn sponsored Walker Shield over 50km on Sunday in perfect conditions.

A field of 38 riders faced the starter with the 14 minute Bunch working well together to fill the first four placings.  Andrew Fraser proved to be the better sprinter to hold of Steve Smith, Chris Peters and Dave Taylor in a time of 1.29.34.  Stephen Hills from the 26 minute Bunch held on for 5th place.

The Scratch Bunch of Mel Titter, Greg Marfell, Jason Thomason and Simon Brown had to work hard to catch the 6 minute Bunch which was strengthened by the return of Geoff Mackle and Mark Magee.  Mel Titter was fastest time in 1.17.16.

 

Mitchell Cycles Aaron Taylor Cup

Stratford Cycling Club held the first Taranaki Interclub Race on Sunday, with the annual Mitchell Cycles sponsored Aaron Taylor Cup run over 62km from Stratford to Whangamomona.

In a close finish, Phil Hulse, starting with the 34min bunch, dropped his co-markers on the Strathmore Saddle and went on to win by 8 seconds, in a time of 2.00.32, from Pete Roberts in 1.46.40, Grant Deam, Mike Parker, and Peter Schraft, all from the 14min bunch.  

Fastest time went to Mel Titter in 1.35.57, from Greg Marfell and Simon Brown.

 

Midhurst Tavern Uphill Downhill Time Trial

The Stratford Cycling Club held the Midhurst Tavern sponsored Uphill Downhill Time Trial on Sunday.  The Uphill TT from the Stratford Mountain Gates to the Mountain House was won by Tony Brownrigg in 14m11s (only 16s off the race record), from Blake Fergus in 14m44s, with Blair Cox 3rd in 14m52.  The ladies event was won by Tara Allerton in 17m19s from Creena Thomason in 20m19s, with Jan Stewart 3rd in 20m30s.

In the Downhill event from the Mountain Gates to the bottom of Monmouth Road was won by Anthony Visser in 10m53s from Tony Brownrigg in 11m15s, with Blake Fergus 3rd in 11m44s.  Tara Allerton won the ladies in 12m23s from Creena Thomason in 12m33s and Irene Blair 3rd in 12m46s.

 

Pet Essentials Whangamomona Race

The Stratford Cyling Clubs Pet Essentials sponsored race over 65km to Whangamomona via Huiroa was held with 30 starters.

The D Grade bunch worked well together until the Whanga Saddle where Tom Crehan showed his climbing power to ride clear and win by 1min 4sec from Pete Roberts, in a time of 1.58.00.  Blake Fergus was 3rd, and evergreen Stuart Thomason 4th.  Fastest time went to Mel Titter, in a time of 1.43.46, from Greg Marfell.
